Uber becomes Delivery Hero's largest shareholder with a 19.5% stake

Uber more than doubled its Delivery Hero stake to 19.5%, worth about 1.7 billion euros, with options on 5.6% more. What it means for rivals.
Uber has more than doubled its stake in Berlin-based Delivery Hero to 19.5%, becoming the company's largest shareholder. The holding is worth approximately 1.7 billion euros and secures Uber a dominant position in its rival's future.
The investment comes as Delivery Hero faces pressure from activist investors and regulatory changes. The former majority shareholder, Prosus, was forced to reduce its stake to below 10% to comply with European Commission conditions, and Uber stepped in to fill that gap, a clear endorsement of Delivery Hero's long-term strategy and asset base.
In Germany, Uber operates its own delivery services and competes directly with Delivery Hero, so as top shareholder it is effectively investing in its own competitor. Uber has stated it does not currently intend to increase its stake to the 30% mark, which would trigger a mandatory buyout offer, but it has secured options for an additional 5.6% of shares. That could soon give Uber a blocking minority and massive influence over the company's strategic decisions.
Consolidation shifts negotiating power on the ground
When two industry giants become this closely linked, the market changes for everyone else, and restaurant chains and wholesale providers can see shifts in negotiation power and service coverage. The impact of these financial moves shows on the ground, where restaurant density and delivery radii overlap.
Manual tracking cannot keep up with how quickly these companies shift their regional focus, such as Delivery Hero's potential withdrawal from entire regions under investor pressure. Companies need to understand exactly where these platforms operate and how their networks interact.
Consolidation makes the physical presence and strategic reach of these platforms the thing to watch. A view of the market landscape shows how these corporate shifts will affect local operations and partnerships, so companies can adjust their own strategies before the market moves.
