Proxy CAPTCHA comparison: a 30-day encounter rate experiment

We ran 10 million requests across four proxy types to measure CAPTCHA encounter rates. See the exact data on how IP types trigger or bypass bot detection.

We ran a 30-day test across four proxy types to measure exact CAPTCHA encounter rates against heavily defended targets. By sending 10 million requests to sites protected by reCAPTCHA, Cloudflare, and DataDome, we mapped the correlation between ASN types and bot detection. This breakdown shows the infrastructure you actually need to keep your data pipelines moving without interruption.
The 30-day experiment methodology
Bot detection systems do not treat all traffic equally. Security vendors rely heavily on IP reputation and Autonomous System Number (ASN) classifications to assign baseline risk scores before evaluating your headers or browser fingerprint. To quantify this behavior, we needed a controlled environment that isolated the network layer.
Over 30 days, we routed 10 million HTTP requests through different proxy pools. Our target list consisted of 100 high-traffic domains known for aggressive anti-bot measures. This included major e-commerce platforms, airline ticketing systems, and social media networks. The defensive layer breakdown across our target list was 40% reCAPTCHA v3, 30% Cloudflare Turnstile, 20% DataDome, and 10% custom in-house solutions.
Normalized request parameters kept the IP address as the primary variable being tested. Every request used the same randomized set of pristine User-Agent strings matched with consistent sec-ch-ua headers. We executed the requests using headless Chromium instances controlled via Puppeteer with stealth plugins applied. We logged any HTTP 403 response, JavaScript challenge, or visual puzzle challenge as a confirmed CAPTCHA encounter.
Datacenter IPs face severe friction
Our baseline test utilized a pool of shared datacenter IP addresses. Datacenter proxies offer high bandwidth and sub-second latency, but they broadcast their origin clearly. Security providers maintain massive databases mapping ASNs to known cloud hosting providers like AWS, Hetzner, and DigitalOcean.
Datacenter results reflected this inherent lack of trust, with a 46.2% CAPTCHA encounter rate. When an ASN is classified as a hosting provider, the baseline risk score starts dangerously close to the blocking threshold. If the anti-bot system detects even a minor anomaly in your TLS fingerprint or TCP window size, it immediately serves a CAPTCHA.
While this encounter rate makes datacenter IPs unsuitable for scraping major retail or financial sites, they remain highly effective for low-detection targets. If you are polling public APIs, scraping government databases, or aggregating RSS feeds, the speed and cost-efficiency of datacenter infrastructure easily outweighs the risk of detection.
ISP nodes lower the defense threshold
To bridge the gap between datacenter speed and residential trust, we shifted our routing to static residential ISP nodes. These IPs physically reside in datacenters but are registered under consumer internet service providers. This changes the ASN classification from "Hosting" to "ISP" in the eyes of security vendors.
Encounter rates dropped immediately, to 14.8%. Because the traffic appears to originate from a standard retail broadband connection, the target sites apply a more lenient scoring model. Cloudflare, for example, is far less likely to serve a Turnstile challenge to an ISP-registered ASN unless the request volume spikes unnaturally.
This 14.8% rate represents a manageable threshold for account management workflows. When you need to maintain a sticky session over several hours to monitor inventory or verify ad placements, ISP nodes provide the necessary stability without triggering the constant login verification loops associated with standard datacenter IPs.
Residential networks dominate the bypass
Reliable CAPTCHA proxy bypass at enterprise scale came from moving the workload to our residential IP network. This infrastructure routes requests through physical home devices connected to standard Wi-Fi networks globally.
The encounter rate plummeted to 3.1%. The mechanics behind this drop are straightforward. Anti-bot systems hesitate to block or challenge residential IPs because doing so directly impacts real human customers. E-commerce sites tolerate a higher degree of suspicious behavior from residential ASNs to avoid false positives that degrade the user experience and reduce revenue.
Rotation on challenge mattered too. When a specific residential IP triggered a challenge, our system automatically rotated the connection. The subsequent request routed through a clean node, completely resetting the risk score. For consumer-facing data collection, this rotating residential model is non-negotiable.
Mobile infrastructure as the ultimate baseline
For the final phase, we routed requests through mobile IPs operating on 4G and 5G carrier networks. The results represented the absolute floor for bot detection, yielding an encounter rate of just 0.6%.
Mobile networks rely on Carrier-Grade NAT (CGNAT) architectures. Due to the limited availability of IPv4 addresses, mobile carriers route thousands of individual smartphones through a single public IP address. Security vendors understand this architecture perfectly. If DataDome blacklists a mobile IP, it risks blocking thousands of legitimate mobile shoppers in a specific geographic area.
As a result, mobile ASNs receive near-immunity from automated challenges. While mobile proxies are the most resource-intensive infrastructure to maintain, they are the only viable solution when targeting mobile-first platforms or scraping endpoints that aggressively filter all non-cellular traffic.
How to avoid reCAPTCHA scraping penalties
Upgrading your proxy tier solves the network layer of bot detection, but it is a mistake to assume the IP address solves everything. During our 30-day test, we identified several protocol-level leaks that trigger reCAPTCHA regardless of the underlying IP quality.
First, you must align your TLS fingerprints with your claimed identity. The JA3 fingerprinting method analyzes the initial Client Hello packet sent during the TLS handshake. It looks at the SSL version, accepted cipher suites, and elliptic curve extensions. If your Node.js application uses a standard OpenSSL cipher suite but your User-Agent claims you are running Chrome 120 on Windows, reCAPTCHA v3 will detect the mismatch and lower your score below the 0.3 threshold.
Second, HTTP/2 pseudo-header ordering is critical. Browsers send pseudo-headers like :method, :authority, :scheme, and :path in a specific, rigid sequence. Many programmatic HTTP clients shuffle this order. E-commerce defense systems inspect these frames, and incorrect ordering instantly flags the request as non-browser traffic.
Finally, avoid recycling headless browser sessions without clearing state. Target sites drop tracking cookies and localStorage tokens during the first interaction. If you rotate your IP address but fail to clear the browser context, the target site recognizes the persistent token. The sudden change in IP combined with an existing session token is a recognized pattern for distributed scraping, guaranteeing an immediate CAPTCHA challenge.
Translating proxy CAPTCHA rates to infrastructure decisions
Proxy management aims to optimize the cost per successful extraction, which does not require a zero percent encounter rate. Our 30-day experiment provides a clear framework for sizing your proxy stack based on the target profile.
- Datacenter (46.2% block rate): Deploy for public APIs, bulk DNS queries, and internal tools where detection mechanisms are minimal.
- ISP (14.8% block rate): Deploy for long-running account sessions, social media monitoring, and workflows requiring static identity.
- Residential (3.1% block rate): Deploy for SERP scraping, retail price intelligence, and bypassing aggressive bot mitigation on consumer sites.
- Mobile (0.6% block rate): Deploy for mobile-only APIs, ticketing, and targets that have blacklisted your residential pools.
Building your scraping pipeline on datacenter IPs to query hard targets will cost you more in CAPTCHA solving services and developer time than simply routing the traffic through a higher-tier network from the start.
Match the proxy type to the target's sensitivity
Detection logic changes constantly, but the foundational reliance on IP reputation and ASN classification remains unchanged. By matching the proxy type to the target site's sensitivity, you eliminate the majority of network-level blocking before the target even inspects your headers.
